Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite access control hardware crosses several operator lines, and the part numbers do not always make that obvious. We routinely install and service access control on the Elite SL-3000 and SL-2000 slide operators, the CSW-200 and CSW-200UL swing operators, and the older MiM, MiM-2, and APEX series that are still running all over Costa Mesa’s older neighborhoods. If you have an Elite gate from the mid-2000s, there is a good chance it has a 310 or 310-1 control board inside, and those pair with Elite’s two-wire keypads and the 315 MHz receivers.

The important thing to know before ordering any replacement part is this: Elite changed their keypad wiring protocol between older and newer board revisions. A keypad that works with a Series 1 board will not necessarily talk to a Series 3 board, even though the keypads look almost identical from the outside. We check the board revision stamped on the lower left corner of the control board before we quote any part, because guessing wrong means a return trip and a frustrated homeowner. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Elite specifically, we have found the OEM keypads and receivers hold up better in coastal air than most aftermarket equivalents, and the price difference in Costa Mesa is usually modest. For boards, a quality remanufactured unit from a reputable supplier can be a sensible option if the operator is older and you do not want to invest more than the gate is worth.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing

• Keypad lights up but the gate does not respond. This usually points to a wiring fault between the keypad and the control board, or a failing relay on the board itself. In Costa Mesa, we also see corrosion on keypad terminal screws from years of marine-layer moisture, which causes exactly this symptom.
• Range on the remote has dropped from 60 feet to 10 feet. The receiver antenna connection has likely corroded or the receiver module is failing. Elite receivers are front-mounted on many operator models, which puts them in direct contact with whatever the gate arm collects over a decade.
• Keypad works intermittently after heavy fog or rain. This is almost always a failing keypad face seal. The buttons still press, but moisture has worked its way onto the contact membrane, and the keypad sends ghost signals or no signal at all.
• The gate opens on its own or refuses to stay closed. We see this most often when a stuck key is sending a continuous signal, or when the board’s open-command circuit has shorted. On Elite systems, a failing keypad is the most common culprit.
• Clicking from the control box but no movement. The board is trying to activate the operator, so the issue is usually downstream, but occasionally the board’s output relay has burned out after years of arcing. This one is worth a professional look because the failure can be in either the board or the motor contactor, and replacing the wrong part does not fix the gate.

Elite access control work runs on low voltage, usually 12 to 24 volts DC, so the shock risk is modest. The real risk is to the rest of your system. If you wire a keypad incorrectly to an Elite board, you can take out the board with it, and now a $400 repair has become an $850 repair. What a homeowner can reasonably check is this: confirm the keypad has power, check that the wiring screws are tight, and look for visible corrosion on the terminal blocks. That is a fair Saturday morning inspection.
