We measure off the hinge centerline before we cut or weld anything. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Elite’s factory brackets are good steel, but for gates over 14 feet or 600 pounds we usually fabricate a heavier replacement because the stock bracket is the first thing to fatigue. Signs Your Elite Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags toward the latch side. A stretched or torn hinge weld is the usual cause. The gate loses its square and starts scraping the ground at the far end, which puts more load on the Elite operator every single cycle.
• The opener arm jerks or shudders at the start of travel. This is often the mount bracket flexing under load because a weld has cracked. The motor is fighting movement it should not be fighting.
• You can see daylight through a weld joint or paint lifting around a hinge. A crack that starts small opens up fast once moisture gets in. In Costa Mesa, salt air is patient and it never stops working.
• The gate groans or pops when it opens. A popping sound at the hinge means metal is moving against metal where it should be fused. The hinge is working loose from the post or the frame.

What we’d rather you not do is attempt a weld repair with a borrowed buzz box from the neighbor. Gate hinges carry hundreds of pounds under constant load, and a cold weld on thin wall tube can fail without warning, which in the worst case means a gate coming down on a person or a car.
